Brotato takes the auto-shooter genre and ramps it up to a manic, build-crafting survival arena where the main character is a six-armed potato fighting off aliens with a huge array of weapons and items delivered through procedural generation. Its gameplay teeters on a knife-edge between risk and reward during waves of horror that are becoming more and more intense: Potato movement is controlled by WASD. At the same time, automatic firing of the six arms happens with the equipped weapons; these can be anything from SMGs and rocket launchers to sticks and medical wrenches. Each type of weapon has its own special targeting patterns and synergies that require you to be very careful with your positioning if you want to get the most damage done. The main loop is a spree of buying things between the waves; you can use the scraps that are dropped when you kill aliens to shop at an in-game store where there is a rotating selection of weapons and items that can be combined to give effects that are more and more ridiculous, for example, you can combine a taser with elemental damage or you can build up your luck so that every critical hit results in an explosion. Choice of character changes the whole game plan, with numerous unlockable potatoes giving totally different modifiers, while one could be brilliant in melee but be allergic to ranged, another could be a powerful engineer at the start, but with a damage debuff. So, it results in a roguelike cycle of ever-changing experiments. The character of your game can switch from being a slow heavyweight with rocket launchers to a vulnerable speedster using SMGs that are dual-wielded, only based on your choices in the shop. Brotato combines delightful pixel art, lightning-fast tempo, and a profound, slot-machine-like buildcrafting to create a power fantasy that is highly replayable and where succeeding means becoming an ever more ludicrous, bullet-hell-destroying potato.
