BrokenLore:​‍​‌‍​‍‌ UNFOLLOW changes the whole concept of the social horror genre. Instead of being a horror agent, players become a digital archivist who’s trapped within a social media platform that is alive and dying. You get around the platform through a dreamy mixture of obscure web browsers and crazy control panels. Thus, you can only stabilize the servers by typing the command line. With the posts being encrypted, you must look for the clues that point to the alleged event by going through layers of hidden user posts. Viral memes can be used as “logic weapons” to combat data-phages, which are evil digital creatures that hunt by exploiting online behaviors such as doomscrolling and rage-baiting. The main puzzle is about “thread-jumping”: you follow the broken paths of user accounts to find the major events. Most of the time, you have to slightly change the past postings of users to create a “butterfly effect” that will change the present storyline and thus open the way for new paths. Your character is also susceptible to the game’s “Echo System,” which keeps track of your gaming habits; if you compulsively click or passively observe, the environment and story gradually change, and you are led to a meta-awareness of your own digital consumption.
