Borderlands​‍​‌‍​‍‌ 2 elegantly changes the loot-shooter formula by presenting a more active and brutal combat sandbox where players have to change their tactics continually because of a smarter and more aggressive bestiary of enemies. The main loop of searching for guns with randomized stats that can number in the billions is still there. Still, it is taken to a higher level by a much larger arsenal that not only includes new weapon manufacturers but also new unique firing behaviors for weapons of these manufacturers, such as the walking, exploding bullets of a Bandit shotgun or the ricocheting rounds of a Hyperion pistol, and also the introduction of powerful E-Tech and Seraph gear.

This all happens in a world where enemies do not simply run at you anymore; they flank, take cover, and have specific elemental vulnerabilities that require you to switch weapons strategically, while the hilariously insane AI of the new “Psycho” variants that ensures a chaotic state at all times, thus the unpredictability and intense engagement of each firefight, is, in fact, a constant, among other things. The game next to the shooting being refined is the character customization to an extent only possible by a genius, and a world that seems to be really reactive to the player’s journey.
