Beyond Eyes is a calm, deeply moving narrative game that presents the world to you from a blind girl’s point of view, as if you were her, relying on her other senses and what she can imagine. You control Rae, a young girl who has lost her sight due to an accident, and therefore see the world not through detailed visuals, but a watercolor impression that is manifested around you based on sounds, smells, and memories. The game moves you along a very peaceful path of revelation; you direct Rae through a sequence of artistically designed settings, starting from her garden all the way to an unfamiliar city, the world unfolding only as she experiences it through her senses. The tweet of a bird reveals a faint figure far off, the aroma of wet earth slowly brings to light a puddle beside you, and the feel of a path beneath one’s feet is used to draw the way that one has to go. The main theme here is a state of being exposed coupled with marvel; one is kept guessing as to what is there behind the immediate, hazy veil, which makes for an ongoing, mild suspense as one unthinkingly relies on Rae’s senses for guidance. There is no fighting, no losing situations, just the soft, reflective act of getting to know the environment in conjunction with the deepening emotional bond that players develop with a main character who deals with the world in a totally different way than most players do. At first a sensory game, the story follows Rae tracking the scent of orange blossom on her way to her lost cat and, in the end, finding herself. This lovely, emotional piece takes advantage of its special viewpoint to eloquently express a meditation on insight, bravery, and the magnificent ability to view the world not through your eyes but through your heart.
