Arma 2: Combined Operations is a detailed and complex military simulation that is more focused on realism, tactical planning, and patient execution rather than fast-paced action, which is usually found in conventional shooters. The game is centered around its huge, open-world sandbox of Chernarus—a 225 square kilometer terrain of forests, fields, and cities—where stories can take place for hours and at long distances are often more than 300 meters. Winning is not done through twitch reflexes but by such means as protection use, smart movement through the terrain, strict fire control, and skill in the game’s complicated ballistics system, which considers bullet drop, wind, and even the Coriolis effect.

Players have at their disposal a complete set of authentic military hardware, from small arms of infantry that require the user to limit the number of shots per burst so as not to overheat, to armored vehicles and helicopters that are fully simulated and, thus, need the coordination of the different crew members for operations, resulting in an experience where the effect of a single, well-aimed shot or a clever flank is much greater than that of a dozen rapid-paced firefights. The editor’s control, along with the game’s realistic AI that employs suppression fire and flanking for attacks, led to the creation of the iconic mods like DayZ, which changed the engine to a survival horror experience full of tension.
