Angel Engine throws you into a magnificent heavenly war where you lead a fleet of divine, biomechanical fighter craft, each living, energized by the souls of deceased heroes, in a fight that the entire universe might end if your side loses. Gameplay is a pretty demanding mix of old-school space shooting and very thoughtful squadron management, all going on. At the same time, the whole world is a battleground between heaven and a formless, consuming void. You actually control your “Seraphim” fighter as you travel through celestially beautiful, randomly-generated levels, from the angelic cities formed of crystal spires that have been destroyed to the chaotic, swirling nebulae that illustrate the void’s extension. The fundamental loop is an unending sequence of fight, soul capture, and squadron evolution; each enemy you wipe out drops “Echoes”, pieces of the souls that give life to the void’s armies, that you have to gather to power your weaponry and, much more importantly, to bring back to life and enlist new angels to your side. Among the game’s star features is the “Soul-Forge” mechanic that lets you go deep with your squad customization. Every angel is a character with everything: procedural history, personality, and combat styles. You get to decide their assignments to different Seraphim classes, from wait interceptors to heavily armored and slow ones, which will determine how they will be used in battle. When not flying your missions, you oversee your heavenly ark, the “Ark, ” through which you invest funds in discovering new scientific advancements, restoring your angels’ health, and interacting with their Echoes to open up sections of the challenging, mythological storyline.
