After Long Night’s initial traditional wargame unfolds, it does not really represent a typical warfare game. Still, it is depicted as a personal command simulation with the harsh, pixelated scenery of the deserted the war’s aftermath. The game plays are a very tragic and sad display of triage and desperate logistics, where your biggest enemy is not the opposing force. Still, the endless waves of despair, hunger, and the spreading radioactive fog called the “Shroud” that falls upon you. Every day is a very stressful, turn-based hurry to handle a few survivors—each of them having some disabling things like “Crippling Guilt” or “Radiation Sickness”—giving them out to loot the last supplies from the destroyed buildings, protect the shelters from wild packs of dogs, or try to keep the shrinking security of your home stable.

The main tension is always a terribly painful choice of survival for the short term and hope for the long term: do you risk your only medic on a scavenging mission for antibiotics or keep him safe for the injured that will come? Any one, random, event—like a starving child asking for entry—that can break your delicate balance and make you face morally impossible decisions that will have irreversible consequences. Success is not about the captured land, but the number of dawns that your dishevelled group manages to survive, each being a defeat of death’s bringing, which are difficult to call victories.
