Bleak Faith: Forsaken is a game that really puts you in the shoes of a character living in a truly dark, handcrafted open world that resembles a nightmarish oil painting that has come to life. At its core, it’s a Soulslike experience, mainly characterized by atmospheric horror, intricate exploration, and a combat system that is so unusual it can be a little scary. You make your way through an area called the Omnistructure, which never sees daylight. This giant structure is a mix of different things, all smashed together; on the one hand, you have brutalist architecture, and on the other, you have organic corruption and machinery that has been totally forgotten. Each element, whether it be a rusted steel beam or a wall of throbbing flesh, serves to tell the narrative of a society that is dying its last agonizing death. Fighting takes its time; it is not something that goes quickly. You can pick any of the three classes that are available to you: Harrier, Hunter, or Crusader. Each of these will provide you with their own weapon sets along with their respective stance systems that basically dictate how fast you can attack and how much damage you do. What is most notable about the game is the ‘Procedural Limb Dismemberment’ feature that is present, which is what adds a really gritty dimension to the fights. Enemies will visibly show the wounds that you have inflicted on them by how they respond to you, losing limbs, becoming unsteady, or even changing their attack patterns depending on what kind of injuries they have been dealt. The reward for going around and finding new places in the game is hidden stories that are revealed through the setting, pieces of lore that have been lost to time, the mythical armor sets, and huge, screen-filling bosses that feel like the inhabitants of the world in the same way the other creatures are rather than being there just because the player has to fight them. Advancement is directly related to the intake and wearing of ‘Cognition’ modules; these are the upgrades that are rare, significant, and change your whole build fundamentally, instead of just giving you small percentage gains. What comes out of all this is a merging of cosmic horror, violet and careful world creation, and a battle system that doesn’t tolerate button-mashing but rewards those who use their eyes and think ahead.
