Escape from Yandere takes the stalker-horror genre and turns it into a nerve-wracking, asymmetrical chase game between a cat and a mouse, where you are the object of obsession. You are trapped in a large, lethal love nest that your dangerously unstable admirer has designed. The gameplay is a frantic, resource-starved race for freedom in a huge, interactive mansion that works like a sadistic puzzle box: you have to stealthily go through different parts of the mansion, such as a greenhouse with poisonous plants, a gallery with moving portraits that follow your movement, and a kitchen with shiny, throwable cutlery, while also keeping track of a “Fear” meter that rises with every near encounter and thus attracts the Yandere’s attention. The main gameplay involves collecting scattered items like keys, phone parts, and forged notes to build an escape plan. Still, each thing you touch will leave fingerprints for your pursuer to examine, so you will have to decide whether to go on with your plan or to take care of your safety. The Yandere is an AI-driven, dynamic, and intelligent opponent whose behavior changes as she learns from your gameplay: if you hide in closets too often, she’ll start checking them; if you use the same distraction twice, she’ll get the clue and change her patrol routes accordingly, even setting up traps based on your previous behavior.
