NBA 2K21 made a major and clear change to its control method, especially with the Pro Stick, to create a higher skill gap that separates casual players from those who have studied the game. The recently invented “Pro Stick Shooting” did away with the ease of shooting by just flicking the stick; instead, it was required that players pull it down and hold it to start a shot, then let go within an exact, green area for a perfect release. This method needs muscle memory and consistency. This alteration was also supported by the introduction of dunk-style meters and detailed dribble size-ups, thus giving offensive players an unprecedented toolkit to create their own shot. Still, at the same time, the complexity of the game increased.

On the defensive side, the game got AI helpers that were smarter and lateral moves that were more responsive to be able to match these new offensive weapons, thus making it more thrilling for one-on-one matchups. Although traditional button shooting was still there, the game clearly favored the mastering of the new stick controls for the best performance, so NBA 2K21 was a year of change and practice that was designed for the most competitive audience only.
