Alchemist Simulator tosses you into the harsh, detailed, and mostly dangerous world of a middle-aged potion-maker, where winning is not measured by gold, but by your survival and comprehension of a complex, living science. The main loop is a very engaging one that involves a physical process: you have to handily operate every tool, for example, grinding some roots with a mortar and pestle and then pouring the boiling water from a kettle into a flask that is suspended over a fire. Gameplay is always in the role of a tense experiment to come to a recipe through trial, error, and ancient clues, dealing with a multi-stage brewing process where heat, time, and order of ingredients can lead to avoiding or causing a disaster of a huge, and sometimes explosive nature.

The whole thing here is modeled by a demanding economy where you are required to barter with untrusting villagers, do specific but usually unraveled client orders for love potions or death poisons, enter ghostly woods to pick rare mushrooms and herbs, all transpiring among your reputation, sanity, and the constant threat of the potion so volatile nature that it might set fire to your whole workshop.
