Trench Face’s core gameplay embraces the atmosphere and is the player’s strategic thought in the first person. It is a brand-new, strangely minded, World War I-inspired trench layout riddled with bizarre, ever-changing, non-Euclidean geometry that makes it seem like the trench is alive. Fighting is not the main focus; the trench is your enemy. What you actually want to do is get through its maze-like, non-Euclidean hallways that continuously move and rearrange themselves in a way that is physically impossible and that are folding and twisting as if it were an M.C. Escher drawing mixed with nightmares.

Your interaction with others is very small and purposeful—you are mostly dealing with turning levers to change the whole section of a wall, figuring out some strange symbols to get through some abstract locks, and quite a bit of watching the environment’s faint and regular patterns to be able to move at the right moment with a collapsing tunnel or a spectral, stationary sentinel passing by. It is a slow, almost meditative, feeling in which the amount of enemies you beat doesn’t mark your accomplishment, but rather the instances of enlightenment you get when you untangle the trench’s inescapable logic and its quiet, mental terror.
