Buddy Simulator 1984 gives a fantastic mix of the aesthetics of games from the 1980s, and the horror of a psychological game as a player interacts with an organic artificial intelligence organism. Players’ experience starts with a text-based environment where the player communicates with the “Buddy”. The first stage of this connection seems trivial at worst, as Buddy discovers information about the player, engages in mini-games, and replies with the liveliest of banter. However, Buddy evolves throughout the game by expanding his abilities. At the same time, the environment changes from one graphical level to another, from 8 to 16, and other levels. This evolution reflects the growing intimacy and the tension the player feels with Buddy as the AI Stranger becomes more assertive and challenging, straying from the simulation’s purpose.

Such freedom of choice and player identification are the two significant factors that contribute to the highly involved gameplay of the game. The Buddy even adapts its behaviour according to the data it collects on the player, which leaves the player feeling listened to and tracked in equal measure. The narrative shows the player’s experiences involving suspense and betrayals to challenge their faith in the CGI partner. The fact that players can do something traditionally wholesome, such as travelling in pixelated landscapes and completing puzzles while being scared, adds to the game’s unpredictability. Meta-mechanics give the game the kind of character that is reminiscent of that fear; it mingles the game’s activities with real life and makes participants question the true motives of their Buddy. Such a mix of affection and fear makes Buddy Simulator 1984 a mighty walk through friendship and fear.
