Frostpunk is specifically an isometric survival city builder in a cold, post-apocalyptic world and the last city on Earth. As the leader, you have designed, installed, and maintained a large power generator that supplies the city’s population base with heat and electricity. The game plays like a simulation with a certain degree of strategy as the player manages resources such as coal, wood, steel and food to keep the city functioning correctly. Each choice matters for the worse or the better; enlarging the town can help with living conditions but drain resources, whereas a wasted generator is deadly below zero. Cold-front situations require players to cover up during gameplay because of fluctuating temperatures. At the same time, the “heat map” feature reveals the warm and cold areas and, consequently, where heat is required and/or where buildings should be situated.

The most engaging aspect of Frostpunk is a morality system that puts in front of players the decisions that will influence the morale and survival of the people. You make laws that define society, such as introducing the use of child labour to meet our demand for labour or giving priority to the provision of health care at the expense of the provision of goods. They’re not only mechanics but also story decisions involving citizens who support you or protest against your actions. It’s complemented by narrative-based scenarios that provide replayability in different tasks, such as managing the refugee camp or maintaining the scientific one. With gorgeous graphics, an atmospheric music score, and a focus on suffering and endurance, Frostpunk draws players into its cold, fully realised world. It is a strategically rewarding game that gets players to think.
