Never Forgotten tells a deeply emotional story in the first-person perspective, where players delve into the scattered remembrances of a man who has severe dementia and reconstruct his life through interactive, dreamlike sequences of his past. The gameplay consists primarily of exploring different memory locations in an almost meditative manner, which are artistically depicted as dioramas, a home from childhood, a battleground during a war, a wedding place, each representing a crucial memory that is gradually fading away. During these moments, you can use the central “Recall” system to interact with various items found in these memory rooms, like a photo, a letter, or a familiar song on the radio, and this would lead to short, emotionally touching scenes that depict the protagonist’s relationships, successes, and failures. Movement is smooth and natural, without fight, countdown, or failure situations, only the silent and sorrowful act of witnessing memories changing and disappearing around you. A unique feature of the game called “Echo” effect portrays the delicacy of remembering; as you move forward, you see memories starting to overlap and distort, with parts from different times merging, giving you a challenge to piece together a non-linear storyline, which is very much like the experience of dementia. In between memories, players are shown the simple present-day room of the nursing home with just the protagonist’s very few belongings, a battered diary, a clock ticking to provide a frame of reference and emotional significance to the memories they have seen.
