They Killed Your Cat takes the straightforward and bleak idea of its title to create a revenge simulator with dark humor and extreme violence, in which an ordinary person plays the role of a person pushed to extremes by the death of a cat that didn’t make any sense. Gameplay involves a top-down, twin-stick rampage through a procedurally generated city inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, where your pursuit of justice (or revenge) gradually changes from getting into street fights to waging a full-scale war against the secret organization that is responsible. The main feature is the “Grief” system; how you feel emotionally changes the gameplay. Being very angry might make you deal more damage but be less accurate, while being cold, emotionless sadness could slow down time in order to be very sure of your aim, thus making you work against your mind and your tactics. The combat is a brutal, physics-based playground; you can turn almost anything into a weapon, like shooting trash cans or using hacked security drones, and the environment will respond to your destruction with civilians running away, news helicopters reporting your crimes, and the city government’s power structure changing according to your level of activity as a threat. During the breaks from the game, you visit your apartment, which is becoming a cat memorial and a reminder of your downward spiral, to enhance your skills, prepare for your next step by means of analyzing the corkboard with collected clues, and be exposed to the characters of weird and morally questionable persons who provide you with information, weapons, or betrayals.
